29/9/10 – Registration of Indian Mines to Market Diamond Conference has opened
29 September 2010
The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) third annual international "Mines to Market" (M2M 2010) conference will take place in Mumbai between Oct. 12 and 13 and will feature industry leaders including Diamond Trading Co. Managing Director
Varda Shine, Rio Tinto Diamonds General Manager Jean-Marc Lieberherr and Gareth Penny, De Beers’ chief
executive officer who is stepping down in the coming months.
Presidents and ministers from various mining countries such as Angola, Botswana, South Africa and Canada will attend and
there will be delegates from mining companies, heads of retailers such as Signet Jewelers, Blue Nile and Pandora, and
officials from ABN Amro and SBI.
According to GJEPC, India has increased its global role as a diamond manufacturing centre and, over the past decade,
has begun cutting larger stones of better quality. In addition, India has made strides in jewellery manufacturing in both quality of product and the sheer size of the industry. Gem and jewellery exports for the country as a whole grew 18 percent between 2008 to 2009, when exports totaled $24.9 billion, and 2009 to 2010, when exports totalled $29.4 billion.
M2M 2010 aims to take stock of the industry and help it evolve for the future. At the conference, each country will present a paper
on their current scenario and future programmes, and the panel discussions will revolve around the same topics.
