16/6/10 – Saint-Gobain Abrasives Offloads its Canadian pulp stone business

Saint-Gobain Abrasives, pulp stone abrasives business based in Hamilton,Ontario is being sold to F. W. Roberts, a privately held company headquartered in Lockport, New York, which plans to move production out of Hamilton. Once complete remaining production from Hamilton to its plant in Worcester, Mass.
Half of the 30 jobs at the Saint-Gobain plant will go. In Ontario, the company also has facilities in Midland, Mississauga, Niagara Falls, Oakville, Ottawa, Paris and Plattsville.
"This was a difficult decision because of the impact it will have on our Hamilton employees," Doug Nixon, vice-president of Saint-Gobain’s Bonded Abrasives North America unit said in a news release. "We will work closely with the affected employees to help them through this difficult time." In Hamilton the company made pulp stones — large grinding wheels — used in the pulp and paper business to grind logs into pulp.
