6/6/11 – 3M Extends Family of Innovative Abrasive Belts
6 June 2011
Diversified technology company 3M has announced further additions to a range of premium ceramic abrasive belts launched last year.
Based around highly innovative abrasive grain technology, 3M Cubitron II 984F Abrasive Belts were introduced in 2010 at 36+ grade. The line-up has now been extended to include 60+ and 80+ grade products.
Between them, the range can now cover all applications for which conventional belts graded between 24 and 100 would previously have been used, based on its ability to combine the strength of a lower grade belt with the finish quality of a higher grade product.
3M Cubitron II 984F Abrasive Belts feature precisely-shaped, uniformly-sized and vertically-oriented triangles of ceramic abrasive. These self-sharpening triangles fracture as they wear, forming new, super-sharp points and edges which slice cleanly through metal, rather than gouging or ploughing. This has the potential to deliver significant advantages in productivity and consistency, as well as longer service life, and the potential to reduce cycle times and process steps. They also lessen the amount of pressure the operator needs to apply on manual belt machines, reducing operator fatigue.
3M Cubitron II 984F Abrasive Belts are ideal for foundry and investment casting applications, for tasks such as gate or joint line removal.
The products also work well on stainless steel at all levels of force and pressure, as well as on cast iron, while they can also be used with other hard metals such as carbon steel, nickel alloy and cobalt chrome.
Jim Arbuckle of 3M’s Abrasive Systems Division commented: “The 36+ grade product has been extremely well received since its launch last year and we are confident that the 60+ and 80+ grades will become equally popular. The addition of these two products means that many companies will now be able to source their belt requirements exclusively from the 3M Cubitron II 984F range.”
