Nano and Green – latest lubricant trends
Nano and Green – the new trends in industrial lubricants
7 February 2011
Improving lubricant performance and reducing environmental impact are key goals in a range of applications. Two companies have announced developments in this area.
NanoMaterials, Ltd., a producer of industrial nano-scale additives for lubricants and enhanced composites has developed NanoLub, which it says in a performance-enhancing product that uses nanotechnology. NanoLub’s spherical nested structures contain a rolling mechanism uniquely attributed/characteristic to their shape.
NanoMaterials’ additive is used in two lubricant products that have been launched by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), India. Rhino and HP Numaro Uno, both incorporate NanoLub, which contains billions of spherical nano-particles that significantly reduce friction and wear as well as the extreme pressure properties of the host lubricant. The benefits in use depending on the operation include lower energy consumption, quieter operations, improved power performance, extended operating life and reduced environmental impact. The particles are non-toxic.
These particles, based on tungsten disulfide, provide super-lubricating properties to oils and greases and are sold as concentrates, pastes or powder either to lubricant manufacturers as an additive or as after-market products.
Rhino is a fully formulated gear oil with dual anti-friction and anti-wear capabilities, and HP Numaro Uno, is a new engine oil targeted for the aftermarket. HPCL is the first company to introduce nano lubricants from NanoMaterials Ltd into the Indian market. HPCL is the second largest petroleum company in India with about 25% market share, 8,500 retail outlets, and sales of about $25 billion. HPCL is a Fortune 500 Company. It sells over 400 grades of lubricants.
NanoMaterials Ltd. is a private nanotechnology company founded in 2002 in Israel. The company was granted an exclusive licence by YEDA Research and Development Co. Ltd., the commercial arm of the Weizmann Institute, to manufacture, commercialize and sell a new class of nano particles based on inorganic compounds.
NanoLub is a green, environmentally friendly material, is a registered trademark of NanoMaterials, Ltd. NanoLub is European REACH compliant and has been pre-registered.
Its material has a range of application areas including:
• Oil Additives: engines, gears, chains, machinery, metal working fluids for stamping, rolling and forming, bearings
• Paste Additive for Greases: lithium, lithium complex & calcium soaps
• Assembly Lube
• Dry, solid lubricant powder: anti-friction coatings, resins
Green Lubricant Technology
RelaDyne, Inc.has announced a distribution agreement with BioBlend, a manufacturer of industrial and commercial lubricants that are high-quality "green" products in demand for boosting equipment reliability in wide-ranging climates and also meeting high environmental standards of responsibility. These "green" lubricants will now be promoted on a far broader scale to industrial and commercial equipment operators throughout the entire Midwest and Gulf Coast regions in the US. The BioBlend products are vegetable oil-based solutions that are unaffected by extremes in temperatures, non-toxic and biodegradable.
Growth area for niche markets
Green lubricants are viewed as a considerable growth area for RelaDyne because they are a great ‘door opener’ in new niche markets, such as universities, municipalities and enterprises that operate on the water.
"With our products, industrial machinery and heavy duty commercial equipment can operate effectively in environmentally sensitive working conditions and, as such, even in the event of a lubricant spill there is no negative impact on the environment when using our products," said Sam Burkett, the CEO of BioBlend.
An eight-year-old producer of hydraulic oils, rock drill oils, metal working fluids and greases, BioBlend also is meeting the needs of government entities encouraged to buy products that are safe for the environment and/or foster companies that value promoting environmental measures that they are embracing to be good corporate stewards.
Broad Operating Range
BioBlend offers a signature line of renewable, bio based, and biodegradable products are designed to provide superior lubrication over a broad range of operating conditions. Products are formulated from environmentally responsible chemistries that are produced from renewable resources and designed to assure optimum performance of its customers’ operating systems. BioBlend offers sustainable solutions to industrial and commercial operating challenges by employing innovative lubricant technology that leverages the latest advances in bio-based feed stocks and bio-friendly additives.
BioBlend combines highly stable vegetable base oils with unique additive technologies to create products that provide excellent thermal and oxidative stability while delivering superior anti-wear and anti-corrosion protection. The company’s biodegradable and non-toxic formulations are designed to maximize renewable content that meets or exceeds USDA standards for renewable products.
