sia Abrasives Featured Article: Size Doesn't Matter
sia Abrasives launch 125mm sanding process for the Automotive Crash Repair Market. Simon Goodyer, Automotive Divisional Manager at sia Abrasives (GB) Ltd, explains the benefits.
Revolutionary progress – a complete system
Following on from the successful innovative siaspeed abrasive range, sia Abrasives has taken another giant step towards revolutionising the Bodyshop Industry.Already renowned as a Market and Innovation leader, sia Abrasives have introduced the 125mm (5”) sanding system into the Repair Market.
This system, available from 40 grit paper through to 3000 grit foam, including a range of film discs, is a total system to give Bodyshops a cost down without affecting quality of work, speed of process, quantity of product and maintaining premium products in the operation.
The siaspeed 5 inch abrasive system is readily used within the OE Manufacturing Industry and as such has been identified as the optimal size for an abrasive disc.
Tried and tested
After extensive research and testing with a major Paint company it was found that this sanding format could be introduced into the Crash Repair Market, considering the latest vehicle designs with panel shapes and bumper/spoiler profiles.
It has been proven that the same number of sanding discs were used per job when compared to the traditional 150mm (6”) discs and there was no increase in job application times – all works were undertaken and completed within a similar time frame.Wastage was shown to reduce, as more of the surface of the disc is in contact with the work piece therefore more of the product is used!
Due to the smaller size of the product, less hand sanding is required as the 125mm disc allows access to smaller areas and closer to the edges of the surface being abraded. This is a major advantage on bumpers and spoilers with more of the work area sanded by machine because the 125mm product can access more awkward areas than a traditional 150mm disc. Thus keeping more of the job to a consistent scratch pattern and again reducing the amount of irregular hand sanding.
The operative has more control when working with a 125mm disc and it enables the disc to be kept flatter to the work piece, therefore producing a nicer, smoother finish.
With the siaspeed 125mm discs working flat to the surface more of the dust extraction benefits are experienced, as the sander is not operated at an angle, as can happen with the 150mm system.
Simon Goodyer, Automotive Divisional Manager of sia Abrasives (GB) is encouraging customers to take advantage of the product: “This exciting new concept in sanding for the Crash Repair Market offers Bodyshops a potential saving of 15 – 20%, which straight away assists in profitability. It is being embraced by some of our dynamic forward thinking distribution partners and has been well received in key Bodyshop Groups,” says Simon.
The siaspeed 125mm sanding concept is available in the following formats:
40g – 500g – siaspeed 9 hole 125mm paper discs
